Nine slow life isekai novels where nothing much happens

Nine Japanese web novels where the hero gets the cheat skill and uses it to farm, cook, run a shop, or nap. Pick your pace.

Slow life isekai novels are the genre's small rebellion: the hero gets the overpowered skill everyone else uses to conquer a kingdom, and spends it on tomatoes. The nine below are ordered from "truly nothing happens" to "something happens, but dinner comes first."

The best slow life isekai novels, slowest first

Farming Life in Another World (異世界のんびり農家)

Hiraku Machio, who spent his first life sick in bed, asks a god for a healthy body and a farm, and gets a magic hoe that tills, waters and clears forest on its own. He plants a field in the middle of nowhere and the nowhere slowly fills up with people who want to live near his vegetables, until it has a name, Big Tree Village. This is the purest slow life on the list, because the chapters are literally about crop rotation and who moved in this week.

By the Grace of the Gods (神達に拾われた男)

An overworked office worker dies in his sleep and is reborn as Ryoma Takebayashi, a boy in a forest with a gift for magic and an unusual affection for slimes. He studies them, breeds them and eventually opens a laundry. The whole book is one gentle question, "what is the nicest thing I can do with this?", and the answer keeps being small and practical.

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (とんでもスキルで異世界放浪メシ)

Mukohda, a salaryman, is swept up in a hero summoning by accident, and his only skill is a mail-order grocery that delivers modern Japanese food to a fantasy world. He wanders the countryside cooking for Fel, the legendary Fenrir that has decided to follow him for the sauce. On this list because the monster fights exist only to justify the ingredients, and the book knows it.

I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level (スライム倒して300年、知らないうちにレベルMAXになってました)

Azusa Aizawa, who died of overwork, is reborn as an immortal witch and swears off effort forever. She spends three centuries in a cottage in the highlands above the village of Flatta, killing a few slimes a day for pocket money, which turns out to be enough to make her the strongest being on the continent. The power is the setup, and the book is about her refusing to use it.

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear (くま クマ 熊 ベアー)

Yuna, a teenage shut-in with a fortune in stocks, logs into a game and finds herself in a real fantasy world wearing an absurdly powerful bear costume. She settles in the town of Crimonia, takes odd jobs, adopts orphans, and builds an orphanage and a shop, all while people take her less seriously than she deserves. Slow life with a stronger sweet tooth than most; the bear suit is a running joke that never quite stops being funny.

Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers (Lv2からチートだった元勇者候補のまったり異世界ライフ)

Flio, a merchant, is summoned as a hero candidate, rejected for having stats a shopkeeper would be embarrassed by, and dumped in the wilderness. On reaching level two his numbers go infinite, and he decides the most sensible use of infinity is a house, a garden and a wife, Fenrys. It's here for the domestic comedy: the world keeps offering him wars and he keeps declining.

Drugstore in Another World (チート薬師のスローライフ ~異世界に作ろうドラッグストア~)

Reiji Kirio, a burned-out employee, wakes up outside the town of Kalta with a skill that turns local herbs into over-the-counter remedies. He opens Kirio Drugs, hires a werewolf, Noela, and a ghost, Mina, and treats hangovers, blisters and heartbreak in roughly equal measure. On the list because every chapter is a customer with a small problem, which is the slow-life format at its purest.

Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu (異世界居酒屋「のぶ」)

A Japanese pub's back door opens onto an alley in Aitheria, a vaguely medieval European city, and the locals wander in for cold beer and fried food they have no words for. Nobuyuki Yazawa cooks, Shinobu Senke serves, and each chapter is a different customer and a different dish. It is the oldest book here, from 2012, and it proved a slow life story doesn't need a protagonist at all, only a kitchen.

The Savior's Book Café Story in Another World (異世界に救世主として喚ばれましたが、アラサーには無理なので、ひっそりブックカフェ始めました。)

Tsukina, a woman in her thirties, is told by a god that she is to be a savior, declines, and negotiates a book café on the edge of a forest instead. She reads, bakes, and eventually lets a wounded knight, Il, into the shop. Last on the list because a plot does arrive, but it arrives slowly and knocks first; a small note for collectors, it was serialized on pixiv rather than Syosetu.

How to pick between them

Choose by what you want to smell: soil, soup, herbs or coffee. The top three are for readers who want the stakes to stay low forever, the middle three still let the hero flex a little, and the last three are about the pleasure of running a shop. If you've never read one, start with the izakaya and see whether a chapter with no hero at all still holds you. If it does, the rest of the list is yours.
