Eight novels where the hero is reincarnated as a monster

Eight Japanese novels where the second life comes with claws, bones, a blade or a coin slot. Sorted from least human body to most.

Reincarnated as a monster novels are the isekai genre asking what's left of a person once the body changes. These eight are ordered from the least human shape to the most, starting with the ones where the hero can't so much as speak.

Reincarnated as a monster novels, least human first

Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon

A vending machine enthusiast is crushed by one and wakes as one, at the bottom of a dungeon, able to say only the canned phrases a machine says. Lammis, a hunter with more strength than luck, finds him, names him Boxxo, and carries him on her back. First because it's the most committed version of the idea: no limbs, no voice, and somehow a full adventure.

Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling

The hero wakes as an egg in a forest that would happily eat him and has to level up before he can so much as hatch. A voice in his head reads out his stats, and much later a girl named Myria gives him the name Illusia. On the list for how long it stays small: the early book is a helpless thing hiding under a rock.

Reincarnated as a Sword

A man wakes as a magic sword stuck in a pedestal, memories intact and no idea why. He frees Fran, a cat-eared girl from a slave caravan, becomes her weapon, and she calls him Teacher. Here because the body is an object but the relationship is a parent's, and the book knows it.

I'm a Behemoth, an S-Ranked Monster, but Mistaken for a Cat, I Live as an Elf Girl's Pet (S

A knight is reborn as an infant behemoth and picked up by Aria, an elf adventurer who is certain he's a kitten. He decides to protect her and keeps quiet about the rest. It belongs here for the joke, and for how much the book gets out of a hero who is dangerous and can't say so.

Skeleton Knight in Another World

A player falls asleep and wakes as his character Arc, full plate over a skeleton, in a world where the undead are killed on sight. He keeps the helmet on, takes mercenary work, and gets pulled into the dark elf Ariane's fight against slavers. On the list because the monster body is a secret rather than a handicap.

The Unwanted Undead Adventurer

Rentt Faina, a talentless Bronze-class adventurer in the town of Maalt, is eaten by a dragon in the Labyrinth of the Moon's Reflection and comes back as a skeleton. He wants his old life back, so he sets out to evolve into something that can pass for human. It's here for the slowness, every rung of the undead ladder earned, and for the scholar Lorraine, the best supporting character on this list.

Novel Updates

Momonga stays logged in as the game Yggdrasil shuts down and finds himself, in the body of his undead avatar, in a real world with the Great Tomb of Nazarick and its loyal, alarming servants around him. He renames himself Ainz Ooal Gown and goes looking for other players. Near the end because the body is human-shaped and never in danger; the monster part is what the body does to his feelings.

Demon Lord, Retry!

Akira Ono, an admin shutting down his own game, wakes as its final boss, the Demon Lord Kunai Hakuto, in a body that can't stop menacing people. He picks up a sick girl named Aku and tries to be a decent person in a villain's skin. Last because the shape is human, but everyone who meets him sees a monster, and that's the joke.

How to pick between them

If you want the strangeness of the body, take the first three. If you want a secret to keep, the middle three. If you want the monster to be a costume the world reacts to, the last two. Then ask how you feel about a hero who can't talk. If that sounds fun, start with the vending machine; if it sounds exhausting, start with the skeleton.
